BY KEVIN SAWYER – Driving your vehicle when the fuel warning light comes on is never a good thing. In fact, if you drive until you run out of gas you may be doing some serious damage to your engine especially to the catalytic converter. However, there may come some unforeseen emergency time when you will have to know how far you can go when your gas tank is just about empty.
Ideally, of course, it is always a good rule to never let your tank fall below a quarter of a tank empty. Some technology in some vehicles will give you a computer screen readout of how many miles you can travel on what you have left in your tank. This, of course, can be extremely misleading because how much further you can travel depends on the speed at which you are traveling.
So, how can you figure it out? Once your warning light comes on, the race begins. Slowing your speed will help but you just may find that you can travel further on an empty tank that you might think.
