Here’s why you really don’t need that sunroof

BY KEVIN SAWYER – Everyone, it seems, thinks that the greatest thing ever invented is the sun roof. People, believe it or not, actually ask car dealers if a vehicle they are interested in actually comes with a sun roof. Really? The last thing you need on your car is a sun roof and here’s why…

  • The first thing about it is that you really won’t ever use it. The second thing is the ridiculous cost of it. Most sun roof costs are packed away in your “options” quagmire when you buy the vehicle. When you actually look at what your paying, it can run you anywhere from $1,200-$2,000 or more. You may play with it once or twice after you buy your vehicle but, really, will you ever really use it or anything? Also, if you open it, the aerodynamics of your car is shot and just watch how your handling and gas mileage plummets. In addition, try having a conversation with your passenger with a sun roof open. The noise and the wind vortex it creates will make it near impossible.
  • The roof of a vehicle has been designed by engineers to be an important part of the vehicle’s overall structure and strength. Cutting a whole in the roof destroys the entire structure that is usually built as one solid piece. The sun roof will eventually break somehow and it will cost you some crazy cash to get it replaced at a dealership.
  • Again, your overall mileage is going to take a hit because of the weight of the things. Sun roofs can weigh anywhere from between 50-200 pounds. In addition, the added weight is on the top of the vehicle which raises the center of gravity and causes a huge imbalance in the weight of the vehicle. When was the last time you watched a NASCAR race? Any of those cars have a sun roof?

These are just a few of the reasons that it seems like a bad idea to get a sun roof in a vehicle. The sales people will make it sound like it’s the greatest invention o all time when, in reality, it is just causing you more problems and money than it is probably worth.
