Getting your vehicle ready for winter takes some planning

a1

BY KEVIN SAWYER – Winter is right around the proverbial corner so if you live where the snow and ice and cold will soon be coming, it’s time to prepare your vehicle for the long winter months ahead. There are certain things you really need to do to ensure the safety or yourself and your loved ones for the winter season.

  • An oil change and a tune up are two must haves for your winter preparations. An oil change is important because you will need to use a lighter oil as oil thickens up in the cold weather. if it gets really thick, your engine will not perform well. A tune up will never hurt and will keep your engine fresh and reliable.
  • Next you need to swap out your wipers for some real heavy duty ones. Don’t be worried about the cost. You need them to see. Get the best ones you can afford. Also, check your battery. Make sure its fully charged and charging the electrical systems properly. If not, it may be a great idea to get a new one especially with below zero temperatures coming soon.
  • Belts and hoses are next up especially your major serpentine belt. If they are looking worn or frayed, get them swapped out. Same goes for hoses. Check for wear and for cracks and leaks.
  • The next thing on your list is the condition of your tires. Nothing affects winter driving more than your tires. Make sure they are properly inflated and check the tread. A half of a penny needs to disappear when you put it into the tread. If not, you need new tires. If you can swing it, it is always a great move to just buy some new snow tires. The extra traction they provide provides a peace of mind that you just can’t afford not to have in the upcoming dangerous driving conditions.
